Cinco de Mayo festivities are in full force as I type this! Spanish for the “fifth of May,” the holiday commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla. The win was an unlikely one, and took place on May 5, 1862. Interestingly enough, Cinco de Mayo has been celebrated in the State of California since 1863 and is virtually ignored in all parts of Mexico, except Puebla. American’s take full advantage to celebrate the culture of Mexico and Mexican history on this day. For many, Cinco de Mayo is another opportunity to party - much like Saint Patrick’s Day, Oktoberfest, and Chinese New Year’s!
Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone, I’m off to celebrate with the masses, but only because I am in California..
Mmmmmm, we just ate tacos and tortilla soup :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting that we celebrate more here in the US than those in Mexico do!
